When she introduced New Start 15, Kathy talked about hitting the reset button. It’s a thought I can relate to this January more than most. My family is in the midst of a season of transition, including a new job, a need for a job, a long list of decisions, and a for sale sign with our name on it. It’s a reset across the board! As our upheaval gained momentum in December, my prayer journal filled with burdens of others. Despite being “the most wonderful time of the year,” I listed heavy weights like hospice, prison, grieving, disappointment, and separation. Global and national news added violence and tragedy from Ferguson to Pakistan. December was bleak as “long lay the world in sin and error pining.” In my quiet times of waiting on the Lord, I heard the world groan a question with me, “How do we live out faith in a world with so much heartache?”
When life includes the uncertain we have to cling to the certain.
So what should guide our lives in this crazy world when we finally turn the calendar page to a New Start? I have two nearly grown kids about to launch into this unstable world. What matters most as a Christian in a Christ-less world? A new year brings opportunity for fresh aligning of life to God’s truth.
When we aren’t sure who we are or where we’re going,
He calls us His own and bids us to follow.
I’m craving a New Start to steer me in God’s paths. There’s no time like crisis times to draw us away from the straight and narrow way that leads to life. It only takes one pressure point like unemployment, loss, or conflict to give the Enemy an opportunity to draw us away and make this a year of destruction.
Though our way arouses confusion, His way answers with confidence.
In a time of upheaval, God once told His people, “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” (Jeremiah 6:16b) They didn’t listen to God’s call to holiness, and they struggled on. But I want to listen! God wants to show us the way to go, to dethrone our confusion with His confidence. I want to walk God’s ways; I want my children to walk God’s ways. “He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake,” (Psalm 23:3).
God answers life’s ugly with His holy.
Last year included some ugliness around the globe. If we’re honest, it included ugliness in our personal lives too. But we are not without hope as another year begins. As life exposes our ugliness, the Lord enables our holiness.
