For Day 2 of the 7 day prayer challenge, Heather kicks off the conversation with a thought I can relate to. Sometimes God feels far away from me. How do I pray when He seems distant?
Feeling more alone than ever, another wave of thoughts rippled through my foggy mind.
Today will be the same as yesterday; God doesn’t have time for your petty prayers.
Half tempted to listen to those negative thoughts, James 4:8 came to mind, reminding me how God draws near to us even when we don’t think He this there. God draws near to me even when my Bible has been lying on my nightstand collecting dust, even when I haven’t spent time with Him in ages. He still draws near to us.
Key verse: “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8
How do I pray when God feels far away?
Jules ~ Wrong thinking takes our emotions down an empty road. If we believe God is far, we may resist our need to kneel in prayer. “Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,” (Acts 17:27b). Though the problems and concerns of life might make us feel far from God, His word corrects the false sense that He is distant.
He is as close as our ever-present laundry basket and to-do list.
Do you find it hard to talk to our Father as if He’s familiar, instead of far? To draw near to Him, begin by examining your heart. Ask the Lord to show you if there’s anything in your heart making you feel distant from him. Confess your sin and thank God for his merciful heart and steadfast love. Enjoy knowing He welcomes you with a clean heart, because of His son Jesus.
Children look for open arms to invite them to come snuggle with their parent. To realize Abba’s invitation to us, we only need to look around at what He has made to see His loving nature. Creatures and creation alike reveal God’s merciful attitude and nurturing ways, ready to embrace the broken and soothe the hurting. Creation reminds each woman that an attentive Father leans down to scoop her up and hold her close, if she will just turn to Him.
It’s easy to be “double-minded” with our stew of concerns and worries. But when we draw close to our listening Lord, we have the freedom to focus on Him. Think of His open arms, ready to receive our thanks, our surrender, our needs, and our worship.
The truth is, He is not far away at all.
Let’s pause and pray right now. Let’s “TALK.”
- Thank Him – Praise Him for inviting you to come near.
- Acknowledge Him – Surrender whatever it is that makes you feel far from God.
- Lift up others – Ask the Lord to help those you love to draw to God also.
- Kneel before God – Worship Him for the gift of being in His presence.
Father, I’m so grateful for the correction from Your word. You ARE near, and You invite me to come close to You. Would You help me let go of burdens on my mind and heart? My thoughts are full of people and problems and unanswered questions. I surrender them to You, so that nothing gets in the way of being in Your presence. As I come to You, would You make my heart clean and show me how to be single-minded? I’m so grateful You open your arms to me. Nearer, Amen.
